A gift idea for your consideration

12/2/2017

Many people become entrepreneurs by simply solving a problem they are experiencing. I created The Superior Register because I thought there might be others who were also frustrated with the small bank registers.

Along those same lines, I would like to introduce you to the Tip and Split Calculator. I had the pleasure of meeting the creator of this product at a seminar we both attended. She is a former school teacher who suffered from the same problem I do! When I go to a restaurant, I bring my reading glasses to read the menu, and I use my cell phone flashlight app to see it. If I forget my readers, I rely on pictures to choose my food. This calculator has a magnifier and light built in! This is not a typical calculator, however. It is designed to help you figure out the tip, and to split the bill if dining with friends. There is a learning curve. After you have used it several times, it becomes second nature. Be sure to practice at home first. I share this because if you need a gift idea, this makes a great gift. (Note: I was NOT given any discounts or free products to promote this product. It is something that solves a problem for me, and may solve a problem for you or a loved one.)

THE VALUE OF KEEPING TRACK

3/9/2017

Let’s just say this story is “hypothetical.”

Once upon a time, a woman started a business. She got her business license in the mail and went down to the local credit union to open a business account. Business was slow. So slow, in fact, that she didn’t feel the need to use a check register to track the income and expenses. (I didn’t say she was business-savvy.) Transactions happened only once every few weeks. One day, an order arrived through the mail which a customer had overpaid shipping by $1.25. The business owner sent a refund check for $1.25 along with the customer’s order. Well, time passed, and the woman was purchasing supplies for the business. She knew exactly how much was in the bank, had just checked before going shopping. She purchased so much, there was only 86¢ remaining in the bank account when she was done. Whew! That was a close one! The very next day, a $29 overdraft fee appeared  on the bank account. What was this? Could it be? Did the person to whom she had written a $1.25 check to weeks before (and completely forgotten about) have finally deposited his check? Yes. Yes he did. An expensive but important lesson about the value of keeping track. (The irony is that the business in this “hypothetical” story was making and selling check registers.)

The moral of the story? Be smart, track your expenses, or you may end up paying what Dave Ramsey refers to as “stupid tax,” like me. Or, rather, like the “hypothetical” business owner in the story.

BEST INEXPENSIVE ACCOUNT BOOK for 2017

12/18/2016

Superior Register has been chosen by Wiki.EZVid.com as the Best Inexpensive Account Book, and among the top 10 account books overall for the coming year. Never heard of them? Me, neither! So, I checked it out, and it’s actually a neat little website with independent video reviews of all sorts of products. They have almost 150,000 subscribers on their YouTube channel, and obviously have good taste in check registers. Check out their review video here: https://wiki.ezvid.com/best-account-books.

Happy holidays to all my fans!

A PSA about Amazon reviews

11/4/2016

One-star reviews of my product on Amazon really bum me out. As a buyer, I rely on the “verified purchase” reviews to tell me whether I can trust the product description and buy online. Buying online can be a gamble, it’s a headache to return something you don’t like, you may have to pay a restock fee, you may even have to purchase shipping materials if you weren’t careful with the original box. Buying in a retail store allows you to handle the item, open it, look carefully, then decide if you want to purchase it. Heck, sometimes I will open up the Amazon app in a retail store to read reviews before I buy. As you can see, product reviews are important.

I have 5 one-star reviews for the Superior Check and Debit Card Register, Standard Edition, on Amazon. Each one is like a knife to the heart. Well, not the one that says “just what I was looking for.” That one just makes me wonder. So, of the four other one-star reviews, only one actually mentions the product and what the person disliked about it. I would love to think that this means the others were mistakenly on the wrong product page, but I doubt that.

I realize I can’t please everyone, but I sure would like to know what the people are thinking when they leave a one-star review. This is why when I do a product review on Amazon, I include as much detail as possible so the other potential buyers can learn from my experience. I can’t imagine ever leaving a review such as, “Worse product I've ever purchased from amazon! Totally shocked how worthless it is.” Grammar and spelling aside, what does that even mean? Did it arrive damaged? Were they displeased with the spacing? The page thickness? The size? Was there something left out of the description which caused them to be upset? Was there something in the description, but they didn’t actually read it, so they thought they were buying something else?

At the end of the day, it is your right as a consumer to warn other people about their potential purchases online. I only ask that if you do, you are specific about what you dislike. This will help other consumers, and also a small business person like myself can take criticisms into account for future improvements.

P.S. I have never paid for reviews, nor given free product in exchange for reviews on Amazon. Thankfully, Amazon has now banned this practice.

Why do I write it down?

6/29/2016

A surprising number of people I speak with don’t write down their transactions at all. They check their balance online, or at the ATM, and trust that it’s close enough to accurate. Me, I keep a $100 invisible cushion and write down each transaction, no matter how small. I round the change up or down, so I just deal in dollars. When I reconcile the account every month or so, if I have accumulated something over the $100 cushion, I transfer it to savings. If I am under, I adjust the balance in my register.

In the last 6 months, I have written 37 checks. I have filled up 13 pages of my personal register. Currently, there are still two checks outstanding from three months ago. They are small checks, $8.00 and $10.00. At some point, I will call the recipients of these checks to find out why they haven’t been cashed. But imagine if I didn’t have that cushion, or if it wasn’t easy to flip through pages (they are both on the 7th page back from my current page) to find the un-cashed checks. I might have just transferred the overage ($18.00) to my savings account, then pay big surprise overdraft fees when they finally go through.

I’m not saying technology doesn’t have a place in my banking life. I just prefer to write it down so I can avoid paying what Dave Ramsey calls “Stupid Tax.” Get the Superior Check & Debit Card Register today.
